I had an opportunity to crew again on Providence II in this year's Tall Oaks Challenge Race. The Windjammers were trying to win back the trophy from the Tall Oaks Yacht Club, which is the Gary's Old Towne Tavern to our Cheers. I'm not sure if it's just the natural order of things or if there's some causation amid the correlation, but we lost the trophy as soon as Jen and I joined the club and haven't seen it since. 

Everyone needs a decent nemesis, and I like to think of the Tall Oaks Yacht Club as the Windjammers’ Gary’s Olde Towne Tavern. I still harbor resentments from losing last year’s Tall Oaks Challenge after our half-decade dynasty, despite (or perhaps due to) being on the boat that took line honors. But the reality is that they’re a pretty normal group of folks and aren’t really the cat-stroking SPECTRE that I’d like them to be.

I crewed on Providence II today in the Windjammers’ second annual Father Goose Race in light air. It was the first race of the season for the boat and we performed well.

Legend has it that in the summer of 2009, a couple Windjammers observed Ron and Kathy sailing in the creek on Stormy Petrel with their kids following closely behind in their boats Stormy and Layla and remarked “There goes Father Goose.” Whether or not this is true (or has any parallel in the animal kingdom) is unclear, but Ron’s contributions to the club over the years is not. The race was established in his honor last year.

Fortuitous still hasn’t been out, but I’ve officially sailed in 2011. In order to try to get more hours on the water and learn a few things from more experienced skippers, I signed up with the East End Yacht Club on the Delaware River for their Tuesday night racing series.
